Also known as Aluminum 5251 Round Bar, this medium-strength, non-heat-treatable alloy is widely specified for marine, automotive, architectural, and general fabrication applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance and good cold formability.

What is 5251 Aluminium Round Bar?

Aluminium alloy 5251 is a medium-strength alloy with good ductility and formability. It work-hardens rapidly and is readily weldable, with high corrosion resistance in marine environments. The 5251 alloy belongs to the 5xxx aluminium-magnesium series, containing nominally 2.0% magnesium and 0.30% manganese.

It has good workability, medium static strength, high fatigue strength, good weldability, and very good corrosion resistance — especially in marine atmospheres. In round bar form, 5251 is used wherever a lightweight, corrosion-resistant bar is needed that can be easily formed, welded, and machined without losing its mechanical properties.

5251 Aluminium Round Bar – Available Tempers

5251-H22 Aluminium Round Bar

Strain-hardened and partially annealed — provides a good balance of strength and formability. Most commonly specified temper for marine and structural applications.

5251-H24 Aluminium Round Bar

Higher strength than H22 with slightly reduced formability. Ideal for applications requiring greater mechanical resistance such as vehicle panels and transport structures.

5251-H26 Aluminium Round Bar

Highest strength among the strain-hardened tempers. Used where maximum hardness is required while maintaining non-heat-treatable properties.

5251-O (Annealed) Aluminium Round Bar

Fully annealed for maximum ductility and formability. Preferred for applications requiring extensive cold working or deep drawing.

5251-H112 Aluminium Round Bar

As-fabricated temper — suitable for general structural applications where exact temper properties are not critical.

Applications of 5251 Aluminium Round Bar

Marine & Offshore

The corrosion resistance of 5251 in marine atmospheres is excellent — exceeding that of 5005 — making it a popular choice for marine applications such as small boats, dinghies, and offshore platforms. Round bars in this grade are used for shafts, fittings, handrails, and structural components on vessels.

Automotive & Transport

5251 aluminium round bars are frequently employed in applications that require high strength and excellent machinability. In the automotive sector, they are specified for vehicle body frames, panel supports, fuel system components, and lightweight structural brackets.

Construction & Architecture

In the construction industry, 5251 aluminium is commonly used in roofing systems, curtain walls, window and door frames, decorative panels, rainwater gutters, and shading systems. Its good formability and anodising effect make it both practical and decorative, particularly for modern lightweight architectural designs.

Aerospace Components

Although not a primary aerospace structural alloy, 5251 aluminium is used to manufacture non-structural supporting components on light-load aircraft, owing to its good fatigue strength, formability, and corrosion resistance.

General Fabrication

Typical general-purpose applications include boats, panelling and pressings, marine structures, aircraft parts, vehicle panels, furniture tubing, silos, and containers — wherever a medium-strength, easily worked, corrosion-resistant bar is specified.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 5251 aluminium round bar used for?

5251 aluminium round bars are used across marine, automotive, construction, and aerospace industries. Key applications include boats, panelling and pressings, marine structures, aircraft parts, vehicle panels, furniture tubing, silos, and containers. The alloy is preferred wherever medium strength combined with excellent corrosion resistance and good cold formability is required.

Is 5251 aluminium suitable for marine use?

Yes. 5251 aluminium has very good corrosion resistance and can be used in normal, industrial, and marine environments without problems. It is best suited for offshore applications. In round bar form, it is widely used for marine shafts, fittings, and structural connections.

What is the difference between 5251-H22 and H24?

Both are strain-hardened tempers. H22 is partially annealed, offering better formability and moderate strength (190 MPa tensile). H24 provides higher tensile strength (210 MPa) with slightly less ductility. Choose H22 for forming operations and H24 for higher-strength structural use.

Can 5251 aluminium round bar be welded?

Yes. 5251 is a readily weldable alloy. The recommended filler wire is 5356 when welding 5251 to itself, 6xxx series alloys, 7xxx series alloys, and most other 5xxx alloys. MIG and TIG welding processes are both suitable.

What standard covers 5251 aluminium round bar?

5251 aluminium round bars are covered under EN 755-2 (European), ASTM B221 (USA), and AMS 4069 for aerospace applications. The UNS designation is A95251 and the DIN equivalent is 3.3525.

Do you supply mill test certificates with 5251 round bars?

Yes. Every order is supplied with full material certification including mill test report, chemical composition certificate, mechanical properties report, and heat number traceability. Third-party inspection certificates are available on request.
