Aluminum Welded Tubes

Aluminum Welded Tubes

Aluminum Welded Tubes are a highly versatile and cost-effective solution for a wide range of industrial, structural, and decorative applications. Unlike seamless tubes, which are extruded or drawn from a solid billet, welded tubes are manufactured by forming a flat strip of aluminum into a tubular shape and then joining the edges with a longitudinal weld. This process allows for excellent consistency in wall thickness and a smooth surface finish.

Manufacturing Process and Key Features

Welded tubes are typically produced using one of several methods, with Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) or High-Frequency Welding (HFW) being common for aluminum.

  • Process: A strip of aluminum coil is progressively rolled through a series of dies to achieve the desired tubular shape. The edges are then welded together without the addition of filler metal (in most cases), creating a reliable and strong seam.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: The production method using rolled coil is generally more economical than the extrusion process for seamless tubes, making welded tubes the preferred choice for applications where pressure requirements are moderate and budget is a primary consideration.
  • Dimensional Consistency: Welded tubes offer extremely tight tolerances on outer diameter and wall thickness. This precision is vital for applications requiring close-fitting parts or consistent flow characteristics.
  • Surface Finish: The outer and inner surfaces of welded tubing are typically very smooth, which is beneficial for aesthetic applications and for minimizing friction in fluid transport systems.

Available Grades and Alloys

Alloy Grade Key Characteristics Typical Applications
5052 Excellent corrosion resistance (especially to saltwater), good workability, and high fatigue strength. Not heat-treatable. Marine components, fuel and oil lines, hydraulic tubing, and general fabrication.
6061 The most common general-purpose alloy. Excellent joining characteristics (welding and brazing), good acceptance of coatings, high strength (T6 temper), and good corrosion resistance. Structural framing, truck and trailer components, rail cars, furniture, high-pressure applications (when reinforced).
6063 Known as an architectural alloy. Good surface finish, excellent corrosion resistance, and ease of extrusion. Lower strength than 6061. Architectural trim, window and door frames, irrigation tubing, heat exchanger applications.

We supply aluminum welded tubes in several popular alloys, each offering a distinct combination of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability.

Advantages Over Seamless Tubing

While seamless tubing is necessary for extreme pressure applications, aluminum welded tubes offer distinct advantages for many industrial and commercial uses:

  • Superior Dimensional Control: Welded tubing often holds tighter tolerances on wall thickness eccentricity (uniformity) than seamless tubing.
  • Wider Range of Sizes: It is often easier to produce certain large-diameter, thin-wall sizes of tubing using the welding process than through extrusion.
  • Better Surface Quality: The outer and inner surfaces tend to be smoother, benefiting fluid flow and visual appearance.
